A Little Winter Weather Didn’t Hold Back our Busy February!

February may be the shortest month but it’s always packed with activities and yet somehow always seems like the longest month to get through.

We had a very busy, productive February. Between the snow, ice, warm days and cold days we were able weather all the ups & downs with just some minor cancellations.

As we noted in a previous post, we were able to celebrate Valentine’s Day with our Soup Line guests. Everyone had a great time – especially the lucky guests who walked away with some Valentine’s themed prizes!

The kids who attend Wildside parties had a great Valentine’s celebration – also just a week, late thanks to another winter storm. But even with the delayed event, over 50 excited kids decked in red & pink swarmed the Trinity Center for an evening of games, food, prizes and socializing. Adrian, Director of Wildside, also presented the kids with a great interactive lesson about conflict resolution and dealing with problems in a Godly way. At the end of the night, the kids wearing the most red & pink all won special prizes plus one lucky gal won a giant Kit Kat!!

Wildside hosts large themed parties like this each month during the school year. In addition to these events, Wildside Youth hosts Sunday Night Wild a couple times a month plus each summer they host Camp Wild which is a four week day camp for kids in Hagerstown to attend for free! Learn more about Wildside Youth by visiting http://www.wildsideyouth.com.

One new thing that happened in February was our first in a series of meetings with some local pastors. On the 19th we had about 10 pastors join us for lunch and a tour of our facility. Several of our employees joined us to talk about their respective ministries at The Hope Center and give our pastors a deeper understanding of the various programs and services we offer the public. Following the lunch we took the pastors on a tour of our buildings where they could see the ministry at work.

We were so thankful for the pastors who joined us and got a connection with our ministry. The local church is our strongest support system in so many ways, but many people in the community, including church leaders, don’t totally know or understand how much we do each day for the community. And as churches donate financially or through other donations like food or gently used items, we wanted the leaders to see what their contributions to our ministry are doing. After talking with the pastors we are so encouraged by the renewed commitment from churches in the area to partner with us to do God’s work of reaching the least, the last, and the lost.

We will be having more meetings like this throughout the year with many more pastors. If you’re interested in seeing or knowing more about our ministry, please contact us. It’s one thing to read about what we do or even glance at a picture here or there. It’s a totally different experience to actually see it in motion. To get basic info about The Hope Center and all our programs and services please visit http://www.hagerstownhopecenter.com. If you’d like to talk to someone about seeing the ministry first hand please call 301.739.1165 or email us at hagerstownrescue@verizon.net.

Clover Bowl InviteWe hope your February was as wonderful as ours! And as this month comes to an end we are excited about all the upcoming activities planned for the spring, like Wildside’s St. Patrick’s Day party on March 5th from 5-7pm in the Trinity Center. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at The Hope Center! We celebrated today with our Soup Line guests who got special themed treats and a few of our lucky guests went home with some Valentine’s prizes!

Soup Line is our daily free lunch for anyone and everyone in the community. We serve our community meals, like Soup Line, every day of the year including all holidays and during inclement weather.

Soup Line is one of the important parts of our food ministry and a huge part of our goal to end hunger in Hagerstown and surrounding areas and to make sure no one is food insecure – ever.

And thanks to generous people like you who financially sponsor us and donate food all year long, we are able to feed more people than ever. Which is why we are moving ahead with a refurbishment and expansion of our food services area at The Hope Center. In the next coming months we’ll be revealing the plans for an expanded dining room and kitchen to help accommodate the growing number of guests for meals, and a much larger pantry to house all the food that is donated and used for daily meals and our food bag program.

So as we celebrate this day of love, we want to express our love to you for supporting us and partnering with us to feed the hungry in our community! Thank you so much and we love each of you for your kind, caring spirit! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Wildside Makes January Fun Again!

January can be a bit of a downer month as all the holiday festivities come to a quick and abrupt end and all that’s left is short days and freezing nights. But Wildside Youth is provided a fun remedy for the winter blues for the kids in Hagerstown this past January:

The Meltdown

Wildside kicked off 2018 with a fun, winter-themed evening at Sunday Night Wild called ‘The Meltdown’. Thirty-three kids attended the night full of games, Jesus, food, and fun!

The frozen fun started with a ‘snowball fight’ played with balloons. After the snowball fight the kids got to go ‘ice fishing’ which involved finding Swedish Fish buried in a pan of whipped cream. Following the wintry games the kids enjoyed some singing and then dove right into the lesson.

The lesson, inspiring the events title, was teaching the kids to avoid meltdowns, temper tantrums, and throwing fits. They were taught that using self-control they could resist the attacks by Satan and avoid destructive behavior like tantrums and meltdowns.

The verse of the evening was, “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.” Proverbs 25:28. An object lesson and a game called, ‘Don’t Have a Meltdown’ were used to help illustrate the verse and the lesson for all the kids.

After the lesson time, the kids had snacks and hung out before ending the first Sunday Night Wild of 2018.

Football and Cheerleading Party

On January 23rd the Trinity Center hosted a super bowl sized party to celebrate America’s favorite sport! 56 kids showed up to celebrate Wildside’s 3rd annual Football & Cheerleading Party. They participated in football themed carnival games, a flag football game,  and a football scavenger hunt, along with arts & crafts activities, enjoying delicious food, and hearing a message about being God’s champion.

Building off the lesson of self-control taught at The Meltdown, the kids at the party learned how becoming a champion for God requires self-control – a lot like becoming a championship quality football team. Just like a winning football team needs to practice, problem solve, and work as a team in order to win, we too, need to practice self-control by not throwing fits or getting angry and hurting others, we need to solve problems God’s way and we need to work peacefully together as a team for God.

The kids who attend Wildside events love every minute of it and continue to come back for more fun. Wildside still has some more fun coming with the next big party on February 13th to celebrate Valentines Day. This event is free for kids ages 5-12 so call 301.739.1165 or email info@wildsideyouth.com to register your kids.

Wildside Youth is our kids ministry at The Hope Center. With various events taking place year round, Wildside is providing a safe, fun, and educational experience free for kids ages 5-12 in Hagerstown. During the school year Wildside hosts large party events each month along with special Sunday evening services geared just for kids. In the summer Wildside hosts Camp Wild, a free day camp running for four weeks in July and August. Wildside is also cultivating student leaders through their after school program, The Crew, where young people learn valuable skills and are given some leadership responsibilities during various events and activities at Wildside. Spring 2017 is Going to be Wild!

We’re two months into 2017 and things are getting already getting crazy! And no, we’re not talking about the unseasonably warm, but wonderful, weather we’ve been experiencing.

We’re talking about all the exciting and fun activities hosted by Wildside Youth Ministries at The Hope Center!

Kids from all over Hagerstown join their friends at Wildside to have fun, eat some great food and learn some Biblical lessons in a way that is geared specifically for them.

Sorry your kids missed the events in January and February? Don’t worry, there’s still so much more fun for kids the rest of the year. Take a look at the upcoming schedule of events and mark your calendars to make sure that your kids don’t miss out on any of the fun!

The Fun Never Ends at Wildside Youth Events

Wildside Youth has been having a blast in 2014 so far!
In January, Wildside kicked off the second half of their year with a new party celebrating America’s favorite game, football!

FC14p015
The Football & Cheerleading party got everyone excited for the Super Bowl. The party had football-themed carnival games, art projects, great food and Wildside’s own version of the big game! In addition to all the sports fun & food, the kids also took some time from the action to learn about excellence and how God wants each of us to do our best in all that we do. Sixty kids, dressed in their favorite team jersey, attended this party and ten came forward at the altar call!

In February, Wildside hosted the second annual Valentine’s party. This party was celebrating love, true love, the love that Jesus gives. This was a great opportunity for the kids who attended to learn about the love that passes all understanding; to really get a chance to experience a genuine love that changes lives for eternity. The kids were given time to play Valentine’s themed carnival games, create Wildside Valentine’s cards and so much more.

March was all about the green – clover green! Ireland invaded the Trinity Center to help celebrate St. Patrick’s day with Wildside’s Clover Bowl! This party celebrates the Irish culture and all things green. The kids who attended played games, ate delicious food, and learned about the man who this holiday is all about. The Crew, Wildside’s student leadership training program, put together a video detailing the life of Saint Patrick. In the video the kids learned about his capture, his slavery, escape, transition to a cleric, and his return to Ireland to spread the Gospel to the people of the Emerald Isle. Not only are the kids able to have fun playing games and being silly, they are also given the chance to learn the history behind our holidays and see how Christianity has been changing the world for thousands of years!

Wildside Youth Ministry doesn’t just host big monthly event parties, they also have more intimate activities throughout the month.
Sunday Night Wild is Wildside’s weekly church service in the Wildside Sanctuary. And the kids attending Sunday Night Wild have been having a blast! In 2014, SNW celebrated it’s two-year birthday by having a big celebration. After the birthday celebration, SNW has been focusing on answering the question, “Who is Jesus?”. After that series concluded, SNW kicked off the series “Jesus our King”, complete with a celebration cake and paper crown art projects and an interactive, multimedia lesson.
As kids grow and mature in the program, some are hand-selected to join The Crew. This leadership training program meets once a week. Kids in The Crew learn valuable lessons about leadership while also helping Wildside Youth Ministries in various creative ways. Currently, The Crew has been working through a lesson series called “Camp Preparation”. This camp training program is covering topics about emotional, spiritual and behavioral maturity; learning how to be a good example to others; how to lead and care for a small group; conflict resolution; knowing and setting expectations; and the basics of our faith. All this training and education will hopefully help equip our student leaders how to serve at Camp Wild, be leaders at home and school, be servants at church & other ministries, and most importantly, how to grow their personal faith.

As you can see, Wildside has had a pretty exciting winter & spring. But there is still some great activities coming up! In April, Wildside celebrates Easter with the wildly popular Easter Fiesta party. This event, like all Wildside activities, is free for kids ages 5-12. If you’d like to get more info or sign-up any children for our Easter Fiesta, please call 301.739.1165 or email info@wildsideyouth.com.
