Everyone Had a WILD Time at Camp!

Schools are finally back in session and we’re just a few weeks away from saying goodbye to summer. The carefree, sun-kissed days of summer are now becoming just a memory of another great season of swimming, sunbathing, cooking out and gardening.

So as we start to prepare for fall and all of the wonderful things associated with this season, we fondly look back at our biggest event each summer at The Hope Center: Camp Wild.

This year was another fantastic year for the kids in Hagerstown who attended Camp Wild. Approximately 250 different kids attended Camp Wild this year. The campers were able to partake in such adventures as Tiger Trail: Obstacle Course, Rana Ranch, The Snake Charmer, Zulu, Expedition Panda which is our 600 ft zip line, hiking, hayrides, and, of course, swimming!

In addition to all those exciting outdoor activities, campers enjoyed mornings at the Trinity Center where they played games, sang & danced, participated in interactive Bible lessons, engaged in small group discussion, and ate some pretty good lunches.

Each year it is our privilege to host Camp Wild for free to the kids in Hagerstown’s neighborhoods. Over the course of the four weeks of camp, we target and reach out to kids in the West End, Jonathan Street area, Noland Village, South End, Frederick Manor, and East Side areas of our city.

By providing free transportation to and from our facilities, as well as providing free registration, food, prizes and activities, this is a genuine mission outreach to our city that’s been taking place since the 1970’s.

Bringing Camp Wild to life is not an easy task. There are so many people involved with everything from set up and construction, to helping each day during camp, and the process of cleaning up and tearing down everything after it’s all said and done. Our volunteers logged in approximately 4, 056 hours for Camp Wild 2017! Volunteers help us keep our camp operational each year and free for all the kids who attend. That’s something that each person involved should be proud of.

We’re thankful for volunteer groups from Antietam Rec, Maugansville Bible Brethren, and the many volunteers from Tri-State Fellowship. In addition to all those volunteers, we have many other individuals give so much of their time and resources to helping reach Hagerstown’s kids for Christ. We are so thankful for each and every person who volunteered, donated, and prayed for Camp Wild 2017.

Since many of you might not have been able to daily be a part of Camp Wild we wanted to post some pictures to let you feel like you were there with us each day. These pictures are a tiny snapshot into the fun everyone had at Camp Wild. This is a combination of all four weeks together. If you’d like to see more pics go to http://www.hagerstownhopecenter.com and click on ‘Year in Pictures’ under the ‘More’ tab on the upper tool bar. We hope you enjoy these pictures as much as the campers and staff who are in them!

And just because Camp Wild is over for the year doesn’t mean that all the fun of Wildside Youth Ministries is too. Wildside has a great lineup of activities this fall including:

  • SEPTEMBER 19TH: WILDSIDE’S BIRTHDAY PARTY!

Camp Wild 2015: Gallery of Smiles

Camp Wild 2015 was an incredible summer for both our campers and staff! We had over 230 kids experience all the action & adventure of our free summer day camp. There are plenty of activities for our campers to get involved in each day. From learning about Jesus, to building relationships, to creating art, hiking, swimming, exploring and playing, campers at Camp Wild are never lacking for anything exciting to do each day.

Since Camp Wild is free for any kid ages 5-12, we rely on the generous support of all of our donors in the area. We want to say thank you to all the individuals, churches, civic clubs, businesses and other organizations who helped to underwrite the cost of Camp Wild 2015. We appreciate your support and your commitment to reaching these precious kids for Christ and giving them a summer experience they will always remember.

Camp Wild 2015 is Here!

The Hope Center at Hagerstown Rescue Mission has been ministering to kids for more than 40 years. From summer camp programs, to the Lighthouse Puppeteers, after-school activities, block parties, TV shows, and Sunday Night Wild, our kids ministry has had a long, rich history of reaching kids for Christ.

One of the most exciting ministries that we have for kids takes place every summer. Camp Wild, known in the past as Conoco Camp, is a free day camp for kids ages 5-12. Camp Wild hosts four weeks of summer fun for campers who want to seek adventure, make friends, and get to know the greatest friend they’ll ever have, Jesus.

Camp Wild 2

Mornings at Camp Wild are spent playing games and sports activities, singing, engaging in interactive Bible lessons, spending time building relationships in small groups and enjoying a delicious lunch.

DSC_0284Afternoons are spent outdoors at our camp facility located less than 10 miles from downtown Hagerstown. Campers spend several hours outside learning, playing, exploring and swimming. Various themed activities are provided to our campers that help to immerse them in learning and give them the opportunity to be hands on and experience new things. Other activities for campers include hayrides, inner-tubing down the creek, flying high on our zip line and hiking on our wooded trails.

Camp Wild is a great opportunity to reach hundreds of kids for Christ by giving them a DSC_0526safe and exciting environment to play, explore and learn. Our staff and volunteers spend countless hours a day building relationships with the kids and helping them to see their value to God.

Since Camp Wild is a free camp, anyone between the ages of 5-12 can be a part of it. And we even provide complimentary transportation to and from our camp everyday for families living in certain areas of Hagerstown. All of this is free for the kids of Hagerstown thanks to generous friends and supporters in the greater Hagerstown area.

DSC_0342When you donate financially or through in-kind gifts like gently used items for our Thrift Stores or food donations, you’re helping to send a kid to camp for free.  When you give, you’re providing a summer opportunity that could change that child’s life for eternity. Pretty cool, isn’t it? You just never know how God will use your gift to change lives.

The theme for Camp Wild 2014 is excellence. The campers are being taught & challenged to be excellent in everything they do. They’re learning that no matter what task is presented to them, they should always do their best and try their hardest. God wants the best for them, and in return, they need to give their best to God.

In the afternoon, Camp Wild 2014 takes the campers on an adventure to the exotic continent of Asia. In addition to the exciting activities in our African & Latin American sections of the outdoor camp area, Camp Wild 2014 has added Asian elements of discovery for the kids to enjoy.

The kids are able to partake in activities like the Tiger Trail, a fast-paced obstacle course, the Snake Charmer, an educational hike into the world of Cobras, and Expedition Panda, our 600 foot zip line adventure where the kids fly high above the ground while trying to deliver special “food packs” to endangered pandas.

Not only are the campers learning about new cultures, conservation & outdoor survival skills, they are also being taught about missionaries and how others travel the world to reach people for Christ.

Camp Wild is more than just another day camp. It’s an exciting world full of new adventures, enchanting places, and valuable life lessons centered around Christ. The kids who attend Camp Wild aren’t just aimlessly wasting away their days. They are learning new things, creating strong bonds with staff, and, most importantly, getting closer to God.

We’re so thankful to the staff, volunteers & donors who have helped to make Camp Wild 2014 possible. The vast majority of our supporters & friends won’t be able to see the spiritual & physical impact of Camp Wild on the lives of these kids, but in Heaven, you will. Lives are being changed, hearts are being won, and Satan is being defeated. Children are the most precious resource on earth and we’re thankful for the opportunity to reach them, teach them, and love them.

cw2

Mornings at Camp Wild are spent in the Trinity Center located on The Hope Center campus in Hagerstown. Morning activities include games, free time in our rec rooms, theme time, small group time and lunch. Theme time is where everyone comes together to learn the Biblical principles for the week of camp. During Theme Time the kids and counselors also sing and dance to hip-hop, R&B, and rock-styled praise & worship music!

Following lunch, everyone is transported to our outdoor camp facility located just outside Hagerstown on the Conococheague Creek. This outdoor space is a missionary-themed adventure land with areas like Africa, Asia and Latin America. These different areas have fun attractions and activities like the Sanaa Trail, which is an African styled art area, Expedition Panda, our 600 foot long zip line, and The Great Caiman, an inner-tube ride adventure on the Conococheague! There are plenty of other fun outdoor activities like hiking, obstacle courses and so much more!

Camp13W4p0155

Like we said, all this fun and adventure is free for kids in the greater Hagerstown area! Each week about 50 campers fill our camp with laughter, excitement and the taste for adventure. To many of these kids, this is their only vacation. The majority of our campers come from Hagerstown’s West End, Jonathan Street district, Noland Village and Frederick Manor/South End area.

Since the camp is free, we rely heavily on the support of financial donations and volunteer labor. It takes many people and lots of supplies to make Camp Wild operational for four weeks each summer. We’d love for you to get involved. Below are some ways you can donate your time or resources to help reach kids for Christ this summer.

Camp13W4p045
