Sales, Smiles & Savings – Thrift Store Day Had it All!

What makes a successful Thrift Store Day? Great weather? Energetic volunteers? Excited bargain shoppers? All of the above!

On September 14th we hosted our 2nd annual Thrift Store Day at our Hagerstown location. It was a day full of sales, smiles, and savings! From a storewide sale in our Thrift Store to a special BOGO sale in the Trinity Center, our shoppers had plenty of great items to choose from at rock bottom prices.

In addition to the various sales, our Auxiliary had a food stand in the Trinity Center during the BOGO sale where they sold some delicious food items all day long! We also hosted a mini outdoor festival for any kids or kids at heart who wanted to play some games, jump around in a bounce house, and snack on some complimentary popcorn and cotton candy. The weather this year was perfect for our street festival – unlike last year which was unfortunately rained/flooded out.

All-in-all it was a spectacular day!

We want to thank all of our staff and volunteers who helped to make it all come together so perfectly. We are so grateful to each and every one of our volunteers who gave up part of their Saturday to help us create a wonderful festival and shopping experience for our guests. We are so blessed to have so many friends in the community – some old and some new – who give of their time so easily to help us bring events like this to life. Again, thank you to everyone who helped to make Thrift Store Day so successful!

And to our customers, the regulars and the newbies, thank you for your support of The Hope Center! Our customers may not truly be aware of how important they are to the overall success of all the various programs and services at The Hope Center.

Our Thrift Stores actually have two purposes: one is to provide great quality gently used goods at low prices so that individuals or families on any budget are able to afford material goods without busting their budget. The second purpose of our Thrift Stores is to help fund all the many programs and services offered free of charge to people in need in our community.

Every time you shop at our Thrift Stores in Hagerstown or Chambersburg you are actually doing more than just bargain shopping – you’re providing hope to so many people. A large portion of our yearly operating budget is funded by the proceeds at our Thrift Stores. Purchases made in our stores help to keep the lights on, the doors open, and the food warm for thousands of men, women, and children in the greater Hagerstown area.

When you donate your gently used items like clothing, furniture, housewares, and more, you’re helping to feed families. You’re helping to give overnight shelter to homeless men. You’re helping to provide a fun, safe after-school event for inner-city kids. You’re helping to give lasting change to men desperate to break their addictions.

So many lives have been touched, helped, and changed thanks to our shoppers and in-kind gift donors at our Thrift Stores. As you switch your wardrobe over to fall & winter and get rid of spring & summer clothes you no longer need, take a minute to think about how that one article of clothing has the power to do so much good in your community.

When you donate to and shop at our Thrift Stores you’re part of an eternal master plan that’s so much bigger than you can imagine. God is using your donations and thrift shopping to heal the broken, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and save the addict. Your purchases at our Thrift Stores may not seem like much but God turns your purchase into something spectacular.

So, again, THANK YOU to all of our shoppers, donors, staff & volunteers for shopping, giving and helping to make our Thrift Stores so successful. There are so many lives who were saved because of each of you. Thank you for caring and sharing.

Let’s Recycle Together!

At The Hope Center, we are all about recycling and reusing products to save money and protect God’s creation. We have a recycling program that works with cardboard, paper, and rags. Sales of this recyclable material help underwrite the cost of our many programs and ministries, but it also keeps this items from becoming trash in our ever growing dumps.

And now we need you to help us with a little recycling. You know all those plastic bags you stuff full of groceries and other items at your favorite stores, well, we need them.

Our Thrift Stores are in desperate need of those plastic bags!

We reuse your used plastic bags for shoppers in our Thrift Stores. Using these bags helps us keep our costs down by not purchasing new bags and it keeps new plastic bags from becoming trash.

If you have piles of plastic bags and don’t really know what to do with them, donate them! We’ll use them. And we’ll urge our shoppers to donate them back to us to be reused again and again.

As you go shopping this weekend, collect up your bags and drop them by our offices or our thrift stores instead of throwing them out.

This is a very small way to help in a big way!

To donate your used plastic bags, please call 301.739.1165, email hagerstownrescue@verizon.net or just drop them off at our Thrift Stores in Hagerstown & Chambersburg or at our Administrative Office in Hagerstown. Directions and hours are listed below.

A Sad Goodbye: Leaving a Legacy of Great Faith

Every now and again God sends people into your life who just make an instant impact. Sometimes these people are for the good and other times it’s for the bad.

When God brought AJ Imbach and his wife, Jayne, to Hagerstown from Oregon, we had no idea how quickly we would love having them around. These two made such an incredible impact on so many, from staff, to guests, to customers, AJ & Jayne were a welcomed pair to The Hope Center family.

AJ was hired to be the manager of our Thrift Stores in Hagerstown & Chambersburg. He brought with him not only experience, but a passion to serve the Lord and a kindness very rarely seen in this world.

As soon as AJ started his ministry, he fit right in. And his wife, Jayne, became a fixture at The Hope Center too. She was always volunteering and helping in various ways around the ministry. Her smile and love of people was infectious.

But it wasn’t easy for them to just move across the country. They were leaving family, friends, and a good job in Portland, Oregon. It was very hard for Jayne but she believed, as AJ did, that this was God’s calling and she obeyed.

AJ was a wonderful addition to The Hope Center family. His leadership in our stores was well received by all the staff.  He lead by example and his goal as manager was to create a working environment where the staff could excel in their jobs. He quickly jumped in, coming up with new ideas and creative ways to get shoppers into our stores.

Approximately a month after he began managing the stores AJ experienced some physical symptoms that he had never felt before and he found a primary care physician who referred him to a neurologist.

After many tests, the neurologist made an initial diagnosis of ALS but referred AJ to Johns Hopkins for a second opinion.

In early January AJ received confirmation from Johns Hopkins that it was ALS. All his doctors agreed that AJ and Jayne should return to their home in Portland, OR where they would have a large support system of family and friends to help Jayne provide the care AJ will need as the disease progresses.

AJ and Jayne felt the call from God to come to Hagerstown, and they struggled with having to make a decision to stay or return to Portland.  AJ called his job here at The Hope Center “my dream job.”  He loved what he was doing and he was loved by our Hope Center family.

Throughout this entire ordeal AJ and Jayne did not waver in their faith and trust in God.  They have returned to Portland and AJ is receiving care from a doctor who specializes in ALS.  AJ believes that God is trustworthy, and he stands on God’s Word that says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:13

We are grateful that God allowed our paths to cross and although AJ and Jayne were only here for a short time they touched many lives and their faith and trust in God made a huge impact on everyone they came in contact with.

This situation reminds us that our lives on earth are fleeting, like a vapor in the wind, but the impact of our service to God and the kindness, compassion and joy of following Christ is what will live on.

AJ & Jayne definitely have left a legacy here. Even though they are all the way across the country, their joy & faithfulness is still here as an example to all of us how to trust God through the good times and the bad.

Please join us in praying for both of these amazing people. We, along with every person who has come in contact with AJ & Jayne, don’t understand why this is happening. But God knows. And He cares. And we know that through all of these trials, AJ & Jayne will continue to praise God and impact lives for Him.

AJ & Jayne, thank you so much for your service, but more importantly, your friendship. You both will always be a part of The Hope Center family!
