Winter Weather Advisory

As winter plans another punch to the gut this week, we have a couple of announcements to make regarding winter weather at The Hope Center.

First, if you are a ticket holder for our Ladies’ Auxiliary Dessert Gala event, please keep checking with us about the status of the event. As of this moment, we are still having the Dessert Gala. As we watch the weather reports and assess the situation, we’ll make the decision to cancel or not. If you have any questions regarding our Dessert Gala, please call 301.739.1165 or email

Second, if the wintery weather makes road travel dangerous, our donation trucks will not pick-up donations as scheduled. If you have items to donate and have already scheduled a pick-up for Thursday or Friday, our office will notify you if we are cancelling the pick-up for the day. If you don’t receive a phone call from our office, our trucks will be operating on a normal schedule. If, by chance, the storm does force us to cancel pick-ups, our office will work with you to reschedule a new pick-up time.

Third, if you know of anyone who is struggling and could use some hot food, especially if schools are closed, please remind them that our Soup Line lunch is free and open everyday at 1pm. Even if our Thrift Store is closed, our kitchen stays open. Please spread the word to anyone who could benefit from hot food and good company. Our Soup Line is free for anyone of any age. Please be at our main building by 12:55pm for Soup Line.

Fourth, if you know of any man who is without housing or warm shelter, please bring them to our overnight facility. We provide free showers with toiletries and a comfortable place to sleep. We offer dinner and breakfast if the men are hungry. We don’t want anyone to be out in this horrible snow storm. Please refer them to The Hope Center or bring them to our facilities. Check-in for overnight guests begins at 5:30pm in our main residence building.

For any other questions about winter related cancellations, please call 301.739.1165 or email Be sure to “like” us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter to keep up-to-date with any weather-related cancellations and other announcements.

Great Evening at our Annual Picnic!

Each year, our staff, residents, Auxiliary, Board of Directors and family members come together for an evening of sports, fellowship, activities and delicious food.

Our annual Hope Center Picnic was held on Friday, September, 27th at the Washington County Regional Park.

Our residents enjoyed an evening away from our downtown facilities to play softball, horseshoes, Frisbee and socializing.

Approximately 60 people attended. Our Auxiliary provided chicken & sodas and other guests brought delicious side dishes, salads and desserts.

We always enjoy this event. It’s a nice, casual way to get to know each other outside of The Hope Center and it provides our Board of Directors and Auxiliary to really get to know some of our residents and staff on a more personal level.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our residents to meet some of the loving people who help in many different ways at The Hope Center. The men in the program get to meet and talk to the people who are their invisible support team helping each of the men reach their spiritual, physical and emotional goals.

We are so thankful for our staff, Auxiliary and Board of Directors. These people care so much for this ministry and the hundreds and thousands of lives who are reached by the various programs at The Hope Center.

If you would like to get involved with The Hope Center by joining our Auxiliary, please call 301.739.1165 or email

What a Wonderful Year!

As we say goodbye to 2012, we look back at all the wonderful blessings that God has provided us.

We are so thankful for all of our supporters who have been so faithful this past year. From those who have financially supported us to those who have donated countless items for our Thrift Stores and food bank programs, we couldn’t reach our city without you! God has given us great friends and we are so happy to fight hopelessness in Hagerstown with you!

We want to thank all of our volunteers for helping to make this a banner year at The Hope Center! We’ve had so many individuals, churches, Scouts & other groups helping out all over The Hope Center. From painting, to cleaning, to cooking, to serving food, to packing food boxes, to preaching & teaching, to singing, to hosting Christmas parties & fundraisers, to helping at Camp Wild, our volunteers really help to make a difference in the lives of others! We appreciate all the time that each of you has invested this year at The Hope Center! And we hope to see you again in 2013!!

We especially want to say a big thank you to all of our staff! These devoted people sacrifice a lot to help keep the message of hope alive at The Hope Center. Our staff are hard-working, faithful people who understand the importance of this ministry to the lives of all of our guests. Each day is made possible because God supplied us with the best people to reach Hagerstown! We are so thankful for each person who is a part of our staff!

As we countdown to 2013 in just a few hours, please remember to keep The Hope Center in your prayers for the new year. Combating hopelessness is not the easiest task in a world like ours. Please pray that God continues to bless our ministry with faithful supporters, volunteers & staff.

And please remember to keep each precious guest of The Hope Center in your prayers. These people are the reason that we are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We work tirelessly not just to give them something to eat or a place to sleep but to provide them with the answers and provide them with the hope of Christ.

If 2012 wasn’t spectacular for you, just remember that with each new day, and new year, God’s mercies are fresh and new. He’s able to do all things and with each rising sun there is a promise of something better.

It’s time to say goodbye to 2012 and welcome 2013! May God continue to bless & protect you and your loved ones in this new year! Thanks again for being our friends and helping to change lives!

Happy New Year!

A Beautiful Memorial for a Beautiful Lady

If you’ve driven past our property on the corner of Walnut & Church streets you might have seen something a little different.

This week we had the fine folks from Snavely’s Garden Corner, Inc. in Hagerstown landscape a beautiful memorial garden in front of our Thrift Store on the Walnut Street side.

The garden is in memory of Ellen Resh, the founding partner of The Hope Center at Hagerstown Rescue Mission. She and her husband, Jim, followed the call of God to move their family from the quiet, peaceful life in Cascade, MD to the gritty and unthinkable atmosphere of Jail Alley in downtown Hagerstown.

For years Ellen worked as the “Mission Mom” to create a family environment not only for her own children but for the hundreds of men who were residents and guests through the years.

Ellen wasn’t just raising her children during those years. She was also raising the new converts of men who passed through the doors. She became a positive female influence to all the grown men who were in desperate need of a mother’s love.

Ellen was an important part of the ministry of rescue throughout the years. She was an important part of Koffee Klatch, our weekly Bible study & fellowship time for women. She also oversaw the Sorting Room and all the merchandise that was priced and placed into our stores.

But when Ellen wasn’t busy working at The Hope Center, she enjoyed the quietness of God’s creation at her home outside of Hagerstown. She enjoyed the beauty of flowers and trees and loved feeding and taking care of animals – especially cardinals.

Our Auxiliary decided that the best way to pay tribute to the founding mother of The Hope Center was to create a garden in her memory.

She would love to see the flat, grassy area between the Thrift Store and Walnut Street be landscaped into something beautiful and provide a place for the birds to sit and sing their praises to God.

The garden is not exactly finished at this point. We are in the process of getting a sign installed in her memory.

As beautiful as this garden turned out, we are hoping to do more of these along Walnut Street in the future. Adding trees and plants not only makes our property more beautiful but it also is another way to celebrate God, the Creator, and helps us to be more environmentally responsible by adding more trees to help provide fresh air in the downtown environment.

We want to thank Snavley’s for doing such a beautiful, professional job on the garden.

And we also want to thank the Ladies’ Auxiliary at The Hope Center for funding this gorgeous addition to our property! We appreciate all the work that these ladies do to help improve our facilities and keep the ministry moving forward!
