Tons of Smiles at our Downtown Block Party

On Saturday, September 20th, Walnut Street in Hagerstown came to life with the sights & sounds of laughter, excitement and people having a great time!

Our youth ministry, Wildside Youth, hosted the Downtown Block Party along with Maranatha Brethren and Valley Grace Brethren Churches.

The churches came with games, prizes, food, and plenty of volunteers ready to create a fun afternoon for all of our guests.

The Trinity Center was open and housed various food stands like snow cones, hot dogs, popcorn, and cotton candy along with cold beverages. There was an area set up for our guests to play some basketball and wow everyone with their skills.

We were also pleased to have a short show by “Bam the Liquid Robot”. Peter Arizmendi, aka Bam, stopped by to entertain our guests with a dance sequence. Peter uses hip hop and his gift of dance to share the Gospel. He’s currently in the process of opening a dance studio in Hagerstown. Bam the Liquid Robot has stopped by Sunday Night Wild in the past and he’s making another appearance in October.

Outside on the Walnut Street side of our property were all the games and amusements. From a bounce house, to ring toss, to finger nail painting, to street bowling, face painting, carnival games and a waterslide, there were plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained for hours!

In addition to volunteers from Maranatha Brethren and Valley Grace, our good friends from Grace Pointe Community Church of the Nazarene in Severn, Maryland drove up for the day to volunteer at this event. We were so happy to see their faces again and we’re thankful for their ongoing support of this ministry and their heart for Hagerstown!

God provided a beautiful day for our block party as well. The nice warm sun gave people a good reason to come outside and enjoy the festival in the street.

We estimate that around 250 guests flooded our property to enjoy the free block party together. And the best part was watching kids and parents alike take part in all the various activities!

We are so thankful for all the resources and hard work that the people of Maranatha and Valley Grace did for this event. We know everyone, from guests of all ages, to volunteers, and even some of our residents, had a great time interacting, socializing, playing, eating and celebrating together. We look forward to hosting this event again in the future.

A Little Snow and a lot of Christmas Spirit!

On Saturday, December 14th, the Hagerstown area was blanketed with yet another snow storm. While the snow can be troublesome, at Christmas, it’s a beautiful sight.

There’s really nothing more beautiful than the sight of pine trees draped in snow and white lights twinkling under the blanket of snow.

The only thing that could make the night more magical would be the sounds of Christmas music filling the air.

And that’s exactly what the choir from Maranatha Brethren Church did.

Even though many events were cancelled due to the snow, the wonderful people from Maranatha still performed their Christmas cantata, Christmas is Coming: Sing for Joy!, in the Trinity Center for our residents and some guests who braved the cold & snow.

After the cantata was finished, the choir became servers for the evening and fed the audience a delicious meal prepared by the church.

DSC_1274We look forward to special events, like this, presented by churches in the area. Maranatha always does a splendid job! We’re so thankful that they think of the residents & guests of The Hope Center and stop by for a special performance.

It was a very special evening at The Hope Center as we joined together to celebrate the birth of Christ.

Another Wonderful Maranatha Cantata

Earlier in December, the choir from Maranatha Brethren Church presented their Christmas cantata, “Come See the Lamb” in the Trinity Center during the evening chapel time.

This cantata was free for anyone in the community to attend. A delicious dinner was served with the cantata by the wonderful people of Maranatha.

Approximately 40-50 volunteers came from Maranatha to perform in the cantata and serve the hot meal to our guests. The meal was baked ham, green beans, potatoes and corn, and dessert.

Around 100 people from the community joined in the Christmas celebration that evening!

We want to thank Maranatha Brethren Church for organizing such an excellent night for our residents & guests! The night was perfect. The choir performed beautifully and the food was delicious!! The Maranatha choir is under the direction of Pastor Dan Thornton. We want to say a special “thank you” to Krista Bloom who organized & coordinated the event.

Nothing’s Better than a Good Cup o’ Joe!

During the month of January, Maranatha Brethren Church has been highlighting the Hope Center to their church family each Sunday.

In addition to highlighting the various ministries and programs that take place at the Hope Center, Maranatha also asked the people of the church to donate coffee and sugar for our pantry.

We are so happy to say that the people responded in such a generous way! Coffee and sugar are two very important items in our pantry, for obvious reasons! The residents and guests enjoy a nice cup of coffee each day and therefore we go through a lot of coffee each month.

It’s amazing how important something so ordinary as a fresh cup of coffee can be to a person! We are so thankful that Maranatha was able to collect so much coffee and sugar for the many people that will visit our facilities looking for a warm meal and a good cup of joe!
