Washington County Gives…And So Can You!

On May 2nd, 2017, The Hope Center will participate in Washington County Gives for the first time.

WashCo Gives 1

Washington County Gives is a 24 hour time period of online giving to benefit nonprofits in the area.

Anyone can give online as many times as they’d like during the 24 hours. Each hour prizes are awarded to nonprofits for earning the most online donation support. So in addition to donations given to us on May 2nd, we have the opportunity to earn prize money to use for our ministries and programs!

To donate on May 2nd, simply go to  https://washingtoncountygives.org/npo/the-hope-center-at-hagerstown-rescue-mission and place your donation. Spread the word to your family, friends, Sunday School class, civic group, co-workers and social media friends to join you in giving that day. You can even arrange a specific hour for you and your contacts to give to help us win the time slot.

Thank you for your continued support of this ministry! So many lives have been changed thanks to people like you in the community that give so that we can keep our facility free for those in need. From feeding hungry families, to helping men battle addictions, to sending at-risk kids to camp, to providing a safe shelter for homeless guests, your support is valuable and truly a chance to provide hope to those who need it most. Nurses Bring Hope to the Community

As we all know, nurses are caring individuals. They help make visiting the doctor, preparing for medical procedures, and overnights at the hospital a little less frightening.
Recently, some area nurses showed us just how loving & caring they truly are.

On June 19th, some nurses from Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown visited The Hope Center at Hagerstown Rescue Mission. Our visitors are registered nurses working on their BSN degree.
They are all students in a class about community support agencies and their professor, Barbara Friend, R.N., PhDc from Notre Dame of Maryland University, recommended they visit The Hope Center and learn about the various community outreach programs that take place at our facility.
The students were given a tour by Executive Director Sonny Shank, who took them all over our facilities and spent some time with the nurses going over all the programs and services we offer free to the community.
For a majority of the nurses, this was their very first time seeing and learning about the many things The Hope Center does in the community. Our new friends left the tour with a better understanding of The Hope Center and the constant work we do reaching the community.

As a result of their visit, the nurses organized a food drive and also requested cash donations from co-workers at Meritus.
In early July they presented The Hope Center with 750 pounds of non-perishable food and a very generous cash gift.

We are so thankful for these wonderful nurses who, not only help to care for us and our community at their offices, but also want to help feed and care for those in our community who are struggling in other ways.

Their food and financial donations will help to reach hundreds of thousands of people, including children, families, men addicted to various substances, the hungry and homeless.
It’s a great feeling to know that we have a nursing and medical staff in our area who truly care about helping others.
Thank you Barbara Friend, nurses, and the rest of the staff at Meritus who donated much needed resources for us to continue to provide many basic needs for free to our community.

A Note of Gratitude From Our Residents

Men in our residential program, Foundations Life Recovery, wanted to start the year off right by thanking all the many donors who have helped to keep The Hope Center open and running.

Our donors play a pivotal role in the lives of the men in our residential program. Without their continued & faithful support, many of these men would be lost, alone and homeless.

The financial support provided by our friends keeps this facility open every day of the year and free of charge for men seeking help for their addictions and troubled situations.

Our residents are always extremely thankful for the assistance given to them at The Hope Center. They understand that there are hundreds to thousands of people who are rooting for them and cheering them on to make the necessary changes in their lives so they can live victorious in the future.

Recently, the men wrote down some brief notes of gratitude to our donors. Some men chose to include their names, others didn’t. But all of these quotes are genuine and from the heart! Please read through these notes and remember to pray for each of these men as they battle their addictions and life struggles.

A Note of Thank You From Our Residents!

Just want to thank you for all that you do for this program because it’s helping me to change my life around and get close to God. ~Melvin

Never before have I seen such generosity as I see here.  I am very grateful for the help given to me and the other men here. ~Frank

Thank you that you let God work through you and use you to make a difference in people’s lives.

Thank you for all your love! ~Connor

God bless you and I thank you for the donations that are continually given.  We appreciate it.  May the Lord bless you. ~Dustin

I want to thank you for giving me a place to get a relationship with God and become a better man.

I look up to, and respect, people that stand in the gap where God placed them to be able to help His people.  And an extra blessing are the ones who do it with a warm smile. ~Kevin

Thank you very much.  You truly are a life-saver!

Many thanks to the donors and volunteers and guest preachers.  Your generosity and loving kindness help us greatly and makes a difference.

Many thanks and blessings to all you guys.  God bless you all for everything you guys have done.  I’m so thankful.  My heart can’t explain the gratitude I feel.  Thanks from the bottom of my heart.  I love you all!

Again, thank you for supporting this ministry! We can’t say it any better than our residents but we appreciate your support every single day! You may not be able to see the full impact of your gift but we do, our guys do, and most importantly, God does.

If you are not a current supporter of this ministry, why not start the new year by making a resolution to partner with us to bring hope to the lives of thousands of people in the greater Hagerstown region this year?

Your financial support helps men in our Foundations Life Recovery program, provides overnight shelter for homeless men, feeds daytime guests from the community looking for a nourishing & hot meal, provides food bags for hungry families, gives at-risk children a safe after school program and free summer camp, and many other programs for people of all ages.

The Hope Center does not receive any tax money so our facilities and programs are fully funded through the generous support of our friends.

Now is the perfect time for you to join us in battling hunger, despair, addiction and hopelessness in Hagerstown.

Call 301.739.1165, email hagerstownrescue@verizon.net or visit http://www.hagerstownrescue.org for more info. You can also donate directly from our website through a secure PayPal account.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us in the past and who is pledging to keep The Hope Center operational in the years to come!

Having To Do More With Less…

Times are tough.

We totally understand. We see the increase of food & energy prices and we feel the pain at the pump as well.

But we also see the pain in the faces of those who have been deeply hurt during this economic downturn. The number of women and families in need is definitely greater now than before.

We can see the evidence of the economic downturn in all the various types of people who are packing out our dining room for a free meal at our daily soup line.

Times are tough for us too. As people have been hit by the bad economy, the needs of our services have only increased. But God has been faithful in supplying our needs so that we can reach others’ needs!

We know it’s a lot to ask for your financial support but we want to give you an opportunity to give back to God in a way that will help many others that are in desperate times.

I’m sure there are plenty of other organizations and ministries that have asked for your time and money, recently or in the past. But please consider joining us in reaching your neighbors in need in Hagerstown.

Your gift will allow us to touch lives in many different ways. From homeless men, to families in need, to kids’ activities – like our free summer camp – your financial support will give us the opportunity to meet the physical needs of people while also providing us with the chance to meet their spiritual needs as well. Your gift helps us stay in business without ever accepting any tax dollars to do so!

And we want to make your giving experience as simple as possible. If you go to www.hagerstownrescue.org, you can use your credit card or PayPal account to give a donation online. On the homepage, there is a small, red box on the left side of the page with a link to ‘Give to HRM’. Just click that and you’ll go to our donation page. We use PayPal as a secure way to give online and make it easy to continue to support us. If you aren’t comfortable with giving online, please call us at 301.739.1165 or email us at hagerstownrescue@verizon.net to learn how you can partner with us and support the ministries of hope!

If your budget is stretched thin and you’re unable to give, we understand. But there are other ways for you to support us. We are always interested in people or groups that would like to volunteer. There are many different areas to get plugged into so just email us or call us to start the process. You can also go to www.hagerstownrescue.org and fill out a volunteer application.

If volunteering is not for you, consider donating any gently used clothing, shoes, housewares or furniture. Our thrift stores (Hagerstown & Chambersburg) are a vital part of keeping our ministries financially operational. When you give your items, they may be put in our stores for purchase or they could be given for free directly to people in need of various items.

You could always help keep our pantry stocked. We go through a lot of peanut butter and it’s a staple in our food bags. When you’re at the grocery store, pick up an extra jar for a family in need. You could also organize a food drive at your church, school, work or civic organization. Check out past blogs entries (look under donations or food bank) for lists of items needed.

And of course, no matter how many ways you get involved, please remember to pray for us and all the people we work with. Pray for us in your small groups, Sunday School classes, youth groups and family prayer times. Pray for our residents as they battle addictions and fight for lasting change in their lives. Pray for the homeless. Pray for the hundreds of hungry people in the area who stop by each week in need of food. Pray for the kids who are actively involved in our Wildside programs. Pray for our staff who see the effects of pain and sin, hunger and abuse in the shattered lives of people daily. And pray that God continues to supply for our needs. As we look to expand our services, we need the prayer of God’s people to help guide us and make a way for us to reach all these people in need.

Thank you for being a part of bringing real hope and change into the lives of so many! Your prayers and donations are being used to win people to Christ and meet the physical needs of men, women and kids in the Hagerstown area.
