It’s Time for Washington County Gives 2019!

On Tuesday, May 7th, we’re participating in Washington County Gives 2019!

WashCo Gives 2

Washington County Gives is a unique opportunity for people in the area to donate online to various non-profits in the community.

For 24 hours the The Hope Center will be able to accept online donations through this county-wide day of fundraising. Money raised during the campaign will go towards all the programs and services provided for free at The Hope Center.

The Hope Center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year for people in need. Whether it’s a national holiday or a blizzard, our shelter is always open and our kitchen is always cooking up something delicious!

And we provide all services and programs for FREE to people in need! And on top of that we accept NO government/tax money to operate. Thanks to profits generated from our Thrift Stores in Hagerstown and Chambersburg and through the generous donations of individuals, churches, businesses and civic groups, we are able to meet the needs of thousands of people in the greater Hagerstown area – and we’ve been doing it since 1955!

We are the oldest, continually operating homeless shelter in the area and we aren’t stopping any time soon!

A donation during Washington County Gives will help us continue to help people in need and make necessary improvements to our facilities so that we can plan the future of HOPE in Hagerstown!

We are in the beginning stages of a full refurbishment and expansion of our food services facilities. We’ve outgrown our dining room and pantry and our kitchen is in need of major renovations. Your donation will help us as we move forward in improving the food services area at The Hope Center where thousands of men, women and children receive daily fresh meals and food bag assistance. Your gift is making sure that the homeless will always have a safe place off the streets to get a hot plate of food, the elderly on fixed incomes can have access to healthy meals, and children in Hagerstown will not have to live another day of food insecurity.

To make your donation to The Hope Center on May 7th go to https://www.washingtoncountygives.org/organizations/the-hope-center-661b283e-b24d-4ea7-8fca-8d5e84104eaf

Please encourage your friends, family and social circles to join you in giving to The Hope Center during Washington County Gives 2019!

The Spring Cleaning Bug is Striking Early!

Has the hit Netflix show, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, got you emptying your closets, de-cluttering your house and just getting rid of any excess items?

If so, we can help! Donating your gently used items is a huge way to simplify your life while also helping people in need in your community.

Items donated are either given to people in need or sold in one of our two Thrift Stores (Hagerstown & Chambersburg). Proceeds from our store sales are a major part of our budget which allow us to continue providing all of our programs and services for free to people in need and the sales also help us to take care of the community without costing the taxpayer a penny.

And did you know we can even pick up items from your house? If you aren’t able to drop off your items to our donation drop location at The Hope Center then you can call and schedule a pickup.

We can also give you a receipt for your donated items to be used for tax purposes.

So if the spring cleaning bug has already bitten thanks to a Netflix show, just keep us in mind! Your clothing, kitchen items, furniture, decorations, wall art and more can be put to use to help others in need in your community!

Our donation dock is located at the back of our parking lot off of Church Street in Hagerstown. If you would like to schedule a pickup or learn more about our donation program then please call 301.739.1165.

Happy Kondo-ing!

Our Residents Enjoy a Christmas Party With the CMA!

This past weekend the Christian Motorcycle Association hosted a Christmas dinner for the men who are enrolled in our Foundations Life Recovery program.

The CMA had a delicious meal prepared for our residents as well as performing Christmas songs, reading the Christmas story from Luke and then giving each resident a Christmas gift bag.

And in addition to all the festivities Santa stopped by to celebrate with our residents!

We’re so thankful for the CMA coming every year to host a Christmas celebration for our residents. The guys in the program are enrolled for 13-months while they work through recovering from the various addictions and issues that have caused them to lose so much. Events like this are so important to our residents who are often estranged from their family and loved ones so these types of activities and investment in their lives show a loving community who is cheering for their success.

We want to thank the CMA again for showing so much support to our life recovery program and for caring for each of these wonderful men who are walking down a difficult but healthy path. And to each of you who’ve donated, volunteered, and prayed – thank you. Each one of you is helping not just to provide housing or food for people in need but also making an investment in the life of these men who are battling addictions. Thank you for partnering with us to restore the lives of so many and show them the love of God. Merry Christmas!

The 12 Gifts of Christmas: Day 5

For the 5th Gift of Christmas our neighbors gave to us Jars of Peanut Butter!

12 Gifts 2018 5-001

So jars of peanut butter aren’t exactly as flashy as 5 gold rings but they are just as valuable to us and the people in our community who are food insecure and need some assistance.

Peanut Butter is one of the main staples we include in our food bags that are given to families and individuals in need. Besides being so delicious and versatile, peanut butter adds protein and other health benefits for people of all ages and can quickly satisfy hunger as well as taste buds.

16 oz jars of peanut butter are preferred for their size in our food bags. Any brand or type of peanut butter is welcome. This is an item we are always in desperate need of so please spread the word to your social media contacts.

To donate just stop by our Administrative Office M-F between 8am – 5pm or call us at 301.739.1165 to work something else out if these hours don’t work with your schedule. Thank you for caring and sharing this Christmas season!

Now, Bake Away, Bake Away, Bake Away All!

It’s been said that the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear. While that’s good and all we also know of another great way to spread Christmas cheer: cookies.

After all, it’s common knowledge that the way to any human’s heart is through their stomach and really there’s nothing better than enjoying some homemade Christmas cookies.

Christmas Cookies-001So we’re asking you, holiday bakers, to spread some Christmas cheer with our residents and guests at Christmas. Our kitchen, residential program and overnight shelter don’t close for holidays which means that The Hope Center will be where people spend Christmas Eve, Christmas and even New Years.

We try to make it as special as possible for everyone who comes to The Hope Center during the Christmas & New Years holidays. And we’ve learned that a table full of Christmas cookies always brings a smile to the faces of anyone.

We know that over the next couple of days you’ll be baking and creating all sorts of Christmas magic in your kitchen. And if you feel like you over-baked or have plenty to spare then we’d love to share your treats with our residents and guests. The more the merrier!

To donate, or learn more about our programs and services over the holidays, please call 301.739.1165 or email hagerstownrescue@verizon.net.

Happy baking and Merry Christmas!!

The 12 Gifts of Christmas: Day Two

The second gift on our list is one that is universally beloved by all: spaghetti sauce! There’s nothing better than sitting down to dinner with a plate filled with hot spaghetti topped off with that delicious sauce.

12 Gifts 2018 2-001

We are always in need of spaghetti sauce, especially for our food bag program. In every food bag we put simple, easy, and delicious foods that are generally loved by everyone. And spaghetti easily falls into that category. Spaghetti is a quick but nourishing meal that busy families, or families with limited cooking background, can make without a lot of fuss or time.

But our kitchen also loves using spaghetti sauce for various meals for our residents and community guests so we go through spaghetti sauce quite frequently.

Any donation of spaghetti sauce is welcome but we do ask for 24 oz jars so they can easily fit into a food bag. No matter the brand or the flavoring of the sauce – we’ll use it! And if you’re feeling extra Italian at the grocery store and want to pick up some boxes of spaghetti then we most certainly will gladly accept those as well!

To donate please call 301.739.1165 or email hagerstownrescue@verizon.net. Or just swing by and drop off any donations to our office between 8am – 5pm M-F. And please help us by spreading our Christmas wish list to all your friends, family, co-workers, church, civic group or scout troops.

Thank you and Merry Christmas!
