And so it Begins…

Thanksgiving is just a handful of days away which means our kitchen is getting busier by the minute!

For over 50 years we’ve hosted an annual Thanksgiving buffet for the community. It’s always been free and, even more importantly, it’s been delicious!

Each Thanksgiving, we plan to host 250-300 hungry guests in the Trinity Center, our multi-purpose building located next to the Thrift Store on Walnut Street.

So to have enough food for our buffet to feed almost 300 people, there is a lot of work and preparation that goes into it.

The process began today with the donation of the 16 turkeys that will be the star of our Thanksgiving buffet. Tomorrow, we will roast those 16 turkeys which will take the entire day.

Once the turkeys are finished, we’ll have volunteers who will help to carve and pull the meat off the turkeys. The biggest challenge is not eating every bit of the delicious turkey!

While all of that is taking place, we have other people who are spending time cutting up bread and celery for our famous stuffing.

Preparing the food is not the only thing that goes into this event. We will have several people help us set up the Trinity Center to host 300 guests. From tables, to chairs, to the buffet line, there is a lot of prep work that goes into getting the building ready for the big day.

While the event may only last around 2 or so hours, there are countless hours put into making this day a success.

We couldn’t say thank you enough to all the staff, Hope Center residents and volunteers who will give so much of their time this week to prepare and serve our guests on Thanksgiving. This always has been and always will be a truly community event where we stop being strangers and start being family.

If you would like to join us for our delicious Thanksgiving feast then make it a plan to come by the Trinity Center at 11:30am on Thursday, November 28th, for our annual Great Hagerstown Thanksgiving Feast. It’s free for everyone so invite your family, friends, neighbors & co-workers. There are children’s activities beginning at 11am.

Guests Enjoyed a Wonderful Easter Cantata

On Saturday, March 23rd, the choirs from Maranatha Brethren Church and Waynesboro Grace Brethren Church hosted a beautiful night of music and food to celebrate Easter!

The joint choirs performed an Easter Cantata called “The Story”, which tells about the powerful life, death & resurrection of Christ through beautiful music.

Following the service, the two churches served a delicious, hot meal of homemade chili, bread and desserts. A perfect meal for a cold evening!

There were between 40-50 volunteers who helped to serve the guests in attendance. This is the 3rd time that Maranatha has hosted a cantata for the community and each one has seen a rise in attendance.

We want to thank Dan Thorton, cantata director and pastor at Maranatha, and the choirs and volunteers from both churches for providing such a wonderful night for our guests in the community! We hope to continue having these cantatas every holiday season!

If you would like to support the choirs from Maranatha & Waynesboro Grace then be sure to go to one of their shows this weekend. On Saturday, March 30th at 7pm, the cantata will be presented at Waynesboro Grace Brethren (250 Philadelphia Ave, Waynesboro, PA). It will then be performed again on Easter Sunday, March 31st at 7pm at Maranatha Brethren Church (19835 Scott Hill Dr, Hagerstown).

It’s a Tad Crowded

Every day at 1pm, 1:30pm on Sunday, our kitchen is host to our SoupLine program.

SoupLine is a free lunch experience for anyone in the community who needs a hot meal for free.

Five minutes before lunch is served, a Hope Center staff person leads a small devotional with an inspirational or motivational message followed by prayer.

As the economy continues to struggle, our numbers have been on the increase. We feed all types of people each day at SoupLine. From single men & women, to families and young adults, our kitchen has been busting at the seams.

As this economy keeps making it more difficult for people to afford food in addition to other expenses, we believe that our numbers will continue to rise. Unfortunately, we are already hitting capacity.

Now is the time that we start looking for new solutions to our dining issues. We’re beginning to look for options to expand to allow us more opportunity to reach people’s physical needs so that we can touch their spiritual needs as well.

As we begin to explore different options for the future of our food services ministry, please continue to support us as we feed hundreds of hungry people a week. Your continued financial support helps to keep our kitchen open for our daily guests. And any food donations help to keep our pantry stocked, not just for our residents or guests but also hungry families in desperate need of groceries.

While at the grocery store this weekend, why not pick up some extra items to donate to The Hope Center? We are always in need of these items:

  • Peanut butter (16 oz)
  • Sugar
  • Creamer
  • Spaghetti
  • Spaghetti sauce
  • Rice
  • Egg Noodles

If you are interested in donating items for our pantry or organizing a food drive, please call 301.739.1165 or email for detailed info.
