VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Help us celebrate Thrift Store Day!

On September 14th we are hosting our 2nd annual Thrift Store Day at our Hagerstown Thrift Store.

Building off of what we started in 2018, we’ll be having special activities going throughout the day as the store is open. So we are looking for volunteers to help with the games, amusements, and other family activities that day.

Thrift Store Day 2019 1-001

While volunteer times are subject to change, we are asking for people to help from a 10am – 4pm time frame. There is a possibility of having two shifts of volunteers because we understand that each Saturday is precious in our busy lives. But any help would be ideal!

If you, your church/youth group, family, business, or civic groups would like to volunteer please let us know. Also, if you have any special skills like face painting, balloon animals or any fun type of entertainment activities please let us know!

Our Thrift Store Day is a way for us to thank all of our shoppers for supporting The Hope Center by shopping at our Thrift Stores. Many people don’t realize that proceeds from the sales at our Thrift Stores are a major component of funding for The Hope Center. This funding helps us continue to help thousands of people in our community for free – along with receiving no tax money from the government.

Please spread the word to your social circles, friends, church, clubs and anyone you meet!

To volunteer or learn more about volunteering for Thrift Store Day please call 301.739.1165 or email volunteer@hagerstownhopecenter.com.

Happy Memorial Day!

So often we forget just how blessed we are as a people. We can openly protest against laws we dislike. We can worship however, whenever, and wherever we want. We can work hard and become whomever we want. We thank God for all the benefits of this great nation. But we are especially thankful for the brave and selfless men & women who’ve given their lives to provide us with the safety and prosperity that we all enjoy today.

Memorial Day 4

This Memorial Day we take time to remember the ultimate sacrifice given by each life, and the families who’ve given their loved ones for the cause of freedom. May we never forget the sacrifice of so many so that we can celebrate freely each and every day.

Thank you to our fallen service members for giving your all for each of us. You are not forgotten. Happy Memorial Day.

We hope each of you have a wonderful day celebrating with your family and friends this holiday weekend.

The Hope Center will be closed on Monday, May 27th except for our Soup Line (doors open at 12:45pm), Overnight (homeless) Shelter, and Evening Chapel/Meal which will be open. For more info please call 301.739.1165

Join Us for Easter Weekend Activites

We are just days away from Good Friday and Easter and we want to keep you up to speed on all the activities and scheduled changes this weekend as we celebrate the resurrection of Christ!

Easter Closure-001Before we get into the activities we need to let you know that we will be closed on April 19th in observance of Good Friday. That means all offices, our Thrift Stores in Hagerstown & Chambersburg, our donation drop center and pick-up, and our recycling will be closed for the day.

Our overnight shelter will be open and operating on normal schedule on Good Friday as well as our food services. Our daily Soup Line will be on holiday schedule which means that doors open at 12:45pm on Good Friday.  For questions or more information please call 301.739.1165 or email info@hagerstownhopecenter.com.

Even though our offices and stores are closed on Good Friday doesn’t mean that we IMG_4189aren’t celebrating the miraculous resurrection! We are thrilled to have the choir from Maranatha Brethren Church return again this spring to present their cantata, “The Easter Song”. The Easter celebration starts at 7pm at the Trinity Center and there will be a community meal provided by Maranatha along with the show. All are invited to join! This is a great Good Friday activity for the entire family – and it’s free! There’s plenty of parking located on our central lot on Church Street between Walnut and Prospect Streets. Tickets are not required so invite as many people as you want to join you in our Good Friday celebration! If you’d like more information on Maranatha Brethren Church, including Sunday services times for Easter, then please visit http://www.maranathagbc.net or call 301.733.1717.

Easter Bake Sale Full-001Then on Saturday swing by our Hagerstown Thrift Store for our Auxiliary’s annual Easter Bake Sale from 8:30am – 1pm! You’ll be able to purchase some great homemade treats for your Easter celebration like cakes, pies, fudge, cookies and more! If you are looking for a church to attend on Easter Sunday then please contact us and we can help you find a wonderful place to worship and celebrate the resurrection. We are happy to have so many great churches as partners in our ministry. Please call 301.739.1165 or email info@hagerstownhopecenter.com to get information on local churches.

And don’t forget that one week after this holiday weekend is our 5th annual Rock the RTR Pirate PrincessRun 5K: Pirates vs Princess on Saturday, April 27th sponsored by Martin’s Famous Pastry Shoppe (potatorolls.com). There’s still time to register and it’s only $25 until April 26th. This is a great event for the entire family because we not only have kids activities planned during the 5K but also a Kids Fun Run prior to the main event. More Than Just a Thrift Store

by Aimee Izer

IMG_2324Since becoming store manager I have come to realize that The Hope Center Thrift Store is for everyone in the community. I used to think this was a place for only those whose budget was very limited. Boy, was I mistaken. God calls all of us to manage our money and to be good stewards of what He has given us.

The Hope Center Thrift Store is just the place to start. Not only are you able to bring us your gently used or new items that you may no longer need, but it is the place to start to look for those items that you do need. You may be surprised at what you may find, from clothing to housewares, toys, games, puzzles, furniture, decorations, to cosmetic, jewelry and so much more. We have it all.

There are lots of things that you will find that you can repurpose and reuse. Like a dresser that with a little TLC becomes a coffee bar or a piece of pottery that you turn into a bird bath, there is no limit to the things you can do. The Hope Center Thrift Stores are a treasure trove of unique and amazing finds.

Yes, we are a place for those who are struggling financially, and we love helping those in need, it is our purpose and mission. So please keep this in mind: all money taken in by the Thrift Stores goes right back into all the ministries of The Hope Center. As you can see, not only do your donations greatly help, your patronage to the store helps as well.

I encourage you to come to our Thrift Stores and look at what we have; it’s new almost every day. Then when you see all the great finds, tell your friends and family so they too can see what a treasure our Thrift Stores really are.

God is so good, and you may think shopping at the Thrift Store is no big deal, but let me tell you many people will be shown the love of Christ and His gift of salvation through your donations and purchases at The Hope Center Thrift Stores.

We have two convenient Thrift Store locations for your shopping pleasure: Hagerstown (corner of Walnut and Church Streets with free parking on our lot off of Church St) and Chambersburg at 64 S. Main Street. For more information about our Thrift Stores please visit https://www.hagerstownhopecenter.com/thrift-store

Aimee Izer is manager of our Sorting Department and Thrift Stores. In addition to all she does at The Hope Center she also spends her time reading, gardening, painting, and hanging out with her family. She is happily married for 26 years to her best friend, Terry, and is the mother of 4 boys and the proud grandmother of 4. She attends Evangel Baptist Church in Hagerstown.

The Spring Cleaning Bug is Striking Early!

Has the hit Netflix show, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, got you emptying your closets, de-cluttering your house and just getting rid of any excess items?

If so, we can help! Donating your gently used items is a huge way to simplify your life while also helping people in need in your community.

Items donated are either given to people in need or sold in one of our two Thrift Stores (Hagerstown & Chambersburg). Proceeds from our store sales are a major part of our budget which allow us to continue providing all of our programs and services for free to people in need and the sales also help us to take care of the community without costing the taxpayer a penny.

And did you know we can even pick up items from your house? If you aren’t able to drop off your items to our donation drop location at The Hope Center then you can call and schedule a pickup.

We can also give you a receipt for your donated items to be used for tax purposes.

So if the spring cleaning bug has already bitten thanks to a Netflix show, just keep us in mind! Your clothing, kitchen items, furniture, decorations, wall art and more can be put to use to help others in need in your community!

Our donation dock is located at the back of our parking lot off of Church Street in Hagerstown. If you would like to schedule a pickup or learn more about our donation program then please call 301.739.1165.

Happy Kondo-ing!
